When you’re getting married, you want photos that reflect not just this beautiful season life as fiancés… but also who you are. As a Southern California wedding photographer, it’s my job to help you craft a unique couples session idea that feels so authentic.

Garrett and Marianna are the perfect example of this, and I’ve been so excited to share their story here on my blog.

I first met these two in January 2024 when Garrett planned the most unforgettable surprise proposal.

Literally. It was picture-perfect in all the ways!

He planned a rose-petal aisle, bordered with candles overlooking the ocean. Cue Marianna grinning from ear to ear the second she realized what was happening.

From that moment, I knew these two were something special. There was just something so magnetic about their love.

From “Will You Marry Me?” to This Next Chapter

Fast forward to August 2025, and we were back together for another session. This time, it was all about celebrating the life they have built together..

Marianna had recently become Dr. G, DDS. Garrett continues serving his community as a firefighter. Both of them have worked so hard for where they are.

So, they came up with a unique couples session idea and brought it to me. I was game! I love capturing images that truly represent you

She wore her white coat, and he brought his firefighter uniform and gear. We met up near the ocean, right in those last moments of the day when the sun is the most golden. We wandered, laughed, talked… and captured their true life they’re busy living.

It’s honestly really inspiring to see people chasing their dreams like this!

A Unique Couples Session Idea Is One That Tells Your Story

If you’re wanting to create photos that feel really authentic to your story, start by including things that you actually use in everyday life.

Some of my favorite details from Garrett and Marianna’s session included:

  • Marianna’s white coat that she wears to work every day
  • Garrett’s firefighter gear and helmet
  • Their ring photos resting on top of his helmet
  • Taking photos at the ocean, which is a favorite place for them to go in their leisure time.

The sweetest part of the whole evening was watching how proud they are of one another. It was so apparent in their whole gallery. Find yourself a love like these two, friend!

Here’s the Takeaway: Your Photos Should Feel Like You

One of my favorite things about photographing couples is helping them create a session that feels personal. Your engagement photos do not have to look like everyone else’s. (In fact, I love when they don’t!!)

If you love to paint, let’s set up an easel in a field.
Or maybe you have a favorite coffee shop you two go every Sunday: let’s go there!
Bring your pups. Bring your career.

Bring you.

That is what makes your gallery meaningful.

And if you have been searching for a unique couples session idea, let Marianna and Garrett be your reminder that the best sessions are the ones that tell your story.
