You just got engaged and you’re excited to document this brief and exciting period in your life. I want to help you have the best experience possible for your photo session! So, if you’re wondering how to prepare for your engagement session, you’re in the right place!

The good news is that you don’t need to have modeling experience or know exactly what to do in order to create beautiful pictures. My goal is to capture the two of you laughing, connecting, and simply enjoying this season together. Which basically means you need to just go on date night, and I’ll be your third wheel with a camera! Haha

Okay but in all reality! How do you prepare for your engagement session?

As a Southern California wedding photographer who has worked with over 100 couples, I’ve developed an experience that I walk every engaged couple through when they hire me. I send a detailed engagement session guide before your session. But, I wanted to share a few of my favorite tips right here on the blog to help you start planning.

The Best Photos Happen When You’re Comfortable

One of the biggest misconceptions about engagement sessions is that they’re supposed to feel formal or dressed to the nines in full glam. In reality, we’ll spend most of our time walking, chatting, and doing simple prompts that help you interact naturally. Before you know it, you’ll forget the camera is even there.

Think of it less like a photoshoot and more like a fun day out with your favorite person (and me!)

Prepare for Your Engagement Session with These Simple Tips

Thinking ahead just a little bit goes a long way. Here are a few easy ways to set yourself up for an amazing experience:

  • Choose outfits that feel like an elevated version of your everyday style.
  • Stick with neutral colors and fabrics that have a little movement.
  • Bring a comfortable pair of shoes for walking between locations.
  • Schedule your hair and makeup trial for the same day if possible.
  • Don’t forget to clean your engagement ring. You’ll be surprised how often it ends up in photos.
  • If you’re bringing your dog, ask a friend to come along so they can help when it’s time for photos of just the two of you.

These small details make a big difference and help your session feel effortless.

Best Time for Lighting is Not When It’s Brightest Outside

Lighting is everything!!! But, we aren’t looking to photograph during the brightest part of the day. The best, dreamiest light happens right around sunrise or about an hour before sunset. That soft, golden light creates the glowy look you see throughout my portfolio and gives us the most flattering conditions to work with. Even when sunset is early in the Winter, it’s still worth it to re-arrange your schedule to make it work!

When you schedule with me, we will pick a date & time together that works for you! I will guide you through all of these decisions so you’re never left guessing!

Remember the Goal

Your engagement session isn’t about perfect poses. I promise you can’t “mess it up”. Because your photos are just about celebrating this season of life before your wedding day arrives. It’s about capturing the days you were a fiance! We’ll laugh, move around, and create space for genuine moments that actually feel like you.

If you’re looking for even more personalized advice on how to prepare for your engagement session, every couple who books with me receives my complete planning guide filled with detailed outfit inspiration, location ideas, timeline tips, and everything you need to feel confident before we ever meet.

By the time your session arrives, you’ll be ready to relax, have fun, and enjoy every minute. And that, my friend, is how to prepare for your engagement session!
