This magical venue is one of my favorite places to take pictures! Mission San Juan Capistrano will never get old in my book! As a Southern California wedding photographer, I’ve taken pictures in so many beautiful places. But this one is a place I always feel inspired as an artist.
The moment you walk through the gates, you’re met with the most calm & romantic vibes. Between the historic architecture, the gardens, and the way the light filters through the pathways, it’s one of my favorite places for engagement sessions.
I first started photographing at Mission San Juan Capistrano back in October 2022, and every session feels a little different.
Some couples lean into the sweeping old-school romantic feel of the mission, while others keep things playful!
Either way, this location always gives us the prettiest backdrop time and time again!
One of my favorite things about the mission is how peaceful it feels.
Even though it’s a well-known Southern California spot, there are so many tucked-away corners that make sessions feel intimate.
And if you really want that quiet experience, Mondays are the best kept secret. (Shh don’t tell!)
The mission is technically closed to the public on Mondays, but photographers are still allowed in with permits. That means fewer distractions and no guests wandering into the background of your photos. It creates such an easygoing atmosphere. Especially if you’re feeling nervous about your session at all! It keeps things more private!

Mission San Juan Capistrano Sessions Always Feel Romantic
The textures here are incredible. I mean, you can see it in these photos! In all the different sessions and events I’ve photographed here.
The stone walls, archways, and greenery photograph beautifully in every season. I especially love shooting here during golden hour when the light gets soft and glowy. It’s so freakin’ stunning!!!
It’s also one of those locations where you can dress things up or keep them casual. Flowy dresses, neutral tones, or even jeans and sneakers all work perfectly here.
